About this listing
Bright and peaceful, the loft is a private sanctuary in one of Melbourne's most unique homes - a former church hall and occasional TV set! With your own bathroom, kitchenette and balcony, have your own space with a warm family welcome.
The loft is in a killer location. It's around the corner from Melbourne's most stunning landmark, the Exhibition Building in the majestic Carlton Gardens. Walk to the city, stumble down Brunswick, Getrude and Smith streets and stroll over to Lygon St.
The loft, a former architect's studio, is fully self contained with kitchenette, small dining table, armchair and TV, comfy double bed, bathroom and sweet balcony overlooking the courtyard and Fitzroy sky. The loft is on the same property as our house but is completely self contained.
Fresh Sheridan towels are provided along with Egyptian cotton sheets and new bedding. Shampoo and conditioner is provided. The dining table doubles as a workspace and WiFi is included. We will provide you with an iron and small ironing board, hairdryer, hair straightener and I can lend you a yoga mat and small yoga ball if you're so inclined.
Kitchen includes stove top, microwave, new pots and pans and crockery, mini fridge and a stock of cooking essentials like oil, vinegar, S&P etc. Tea, coffee and milk is also provided.
There is no TV reception but Aussie TV sucks anyway and we'll leave you with a library of DVDs. We've got a stock of books and New Yorkers to also entertain/enlighten you, cards and scrabble.
We can lend you Myki cards to get around Melbourne's public transport and have a bike you can borrow (suited for long legs).
There is a laundrette right around the corner.
We are just a couple blocks from St Vincent's Hospital and the wider medical district and encourage visiting medical staff looking for a longer stay to contact us directly for availability.
One of the most unique houses in Melbourne, our historic inner city home has evolved from radical church hall, scene of gangster shoot out (!), Aboriginal Kindergarten, home of professional pianist, eccentric 70s architect, sometime film and TV studio, and humble home to our little family.
The place is known around these parts as 'Jack Irish's' house, an ABC drama featuring Guy Pearce whose main character lives in the house. The loft has also been used as a film set for the movie 'Tenderhook' starring Hugo Weaving and Rose Byrne. Because of the property's rich history, and pretty awesome wall mural, you can often see tour groups and tourists stop out the front and take pics. We've even come home to someone taking wedding pictures by the front door!
Entire loft, balcony and courtyard. There is a BBQ available for use in the courtyard.
Interaction with guests
We will welcome you to your space and answer any questions you may have but will otherwise leave you to your own devices.
If you need any assistance during your stay just knock on our door or contact us on the mobile.
Fitzroy is Melbourne's first suburb and its streets have retained that early Melbourne Victorian era charm, with a mix of modern architecture thrown in. It is a bohemian enclave with numerous art galleries and studios and the most superb street art in the city.
The majestic Carlton Gardens, which houses the Melbourne Museum and World Heritage Site listed Exhibition Building is just a couple corners away. Walk 10 minutes in any direction and you'll either end up in Collingwood, North Fitzroy, Lygon Street Carlton or the city.
Shopping around here is awesome. There's designer boutiques, factory outlets, vintage everything, vinyl stores and the Rose Street market on weekends.
Being a hipster village, the coffee around here is outstanding and the food is fantastic - try Belle's Hot Chicken, George Calombaris' modern Greek Jimmy Grants, all vegan by Smith and Daughters, and fancy night out at Cutler & Co.
Local music venues include The Standard, Labor in Vain, The Workers Club and it's a short walk to the Old Bar, Bar Open and the Night Cat. Other awesome night spots within stumbling distance are the Upside Rooftop Bar, Naked for Satan, Bimbos, Union Club and the Rainbow Hotel. Fitzroy is the home of Melbourne's live music scene and has a drinking venue for just about every taste - there's even a cider house.
Melbourne CBD is great to visit but when you come to our city you want to stay in Fitzroy. It's where the heart beats.
It's so easy! Just a ten minute walk to the top of the city (theatre district/Parliament Train Station) or catch a tram to the CBD from Brunswick, Gertrude or Nicholson Street. It's a five minute walk to the start of the free tram zone. We're also just a couple of blocks from St Vincent's Hospital and the Australian Catholic University.
Airport arrivals can catch the Sky Bus service to Southern Cross Station then catch the 86 or 96 tram from Bourke Street.
Other things to note
There is a toddler in the house who sometimes cries if he bops his head or doesn't get his meal delivered fast enough. You won't hear him during the night but may hear him during the day when we are hanging out in the house, but it will be from across the courtyard so shouldn't disturb you. We also have a small, chilled out baby. Warning *may make you clucky*
This is a family home. No loud noise or visitors without prior arrangement. Smoking outside the property. Sorry, strictly no pets due to allergies. Please note there is stair access to the loft.

We (Mike and Georgie) are seasoned travellers but we love Melbourne the best, and Fitzroy is the best of the best! We look forward to helping you discover our our great city.
When we travel we love to stay in interesting places and hope to share our unique and historic home with like minded travellers.
We love independent music but with a new family we don't get to see as much live music as we want. Fitzroy is the home of Melbourne's live music scene and we can let you know where to see great gigs.
Mike is a history buff, especially for all things Melbourne, and Georgie's passion is for the outdoors. Luckily there's plenty of ways to combine these interests around Melbourne and wider Victoria. Ask us how!
