The guesthouse is situated up upon a hill inside a 8,000 m2 private park full of Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and huge Chestnut Trees an easy 15 min. drive from either Arona or Stresa. Lakeside beaches, excellent restaurants and shopping facilities are within the close vicinity by car. A huge natural reserve with peaks offering panoramic views of lakes and alps can be reached in a few minutes on foot. The guesthouse's 60 m2 ground-floor apartment has an arcade covered patio and its own gardens.

The space
The independent guesthouse is together with the main building situated inside a 8,000 m2 park, 600 m above sea-level, ensuring a lot of sunshine during the winter months and a cool down in the evening during a hot summer.
The 60 m2 ground floor apartment is located in the two-story guest house. I use the upstairs facilities only as my private office, accessed via a separate entrance. The apartment has autonomous heating, wi-fi internet, and satelite television. The bedroom and the living room have floor-to-ceiling window-doors facing the arcade covered patio and two spacious gardens for guests' exclusive use.
The bedroom contains a queen-sized bed with bedside tables and lights, a huge cabinet with plenty of wooden hangers, plus a desk-table with an armchair.
The bathroom with a window facing the garden has a tub and shower, a cabinet with fresh towels and is equipped with shampoos, a hairdryer, bathoils and soaps.
The living room contains a fold-out futon sofabed with plenty of pillows, two lamps, an armchair, a coffee-table plus a dining table seating four, a 32' flat screen TV and a small library with books in English, Italian and Danish.
The newly furnished kitchen has a washing machine, a refrigerator with a small freezer compartment, two induction plates, a microwave oven, a nespresso coffee-machine, a boiler, and a cabinet with an iron and board. The kitchen is equipped with a variety of coffees and teas, sugar, salt and peper, olive oil, vinegar, napkins and candles plus all standard utensils.
The guests' private garden, directly facing the lake, features a barbercue, a dining table and chairs located under the arcade plus two armchairs and a coffee table for breakfast on the lawn, as well as foldable sunbeds. There are also small sun-chairs and umbrellas that guests can use when going to the beach. The second garden features a bench and Apple, Pear, Cherry, and Figtrees.

Guest access
The guesthouse has its own entrance gate with drive-way parking. The semi-manual gate and the lights on the lane to the house can be commanded by remote control. From the gate to the house there is a 25 m walk along a grass covered lane and up a 12 step stone stairway. The house is wheelchair accessible via a slightly longer (50 m) walk/drive around a bend, avoiding the stairway. The kitchen, living room and bedroom are all directly accessible from the garden patio. The inside doors are all 78 cm wide.

Other things to note
My big but playful Briards are fenced off from the guest areas by an electrical cord, which the dogs respect. However, it is preferable that visitors are early on introduced to my dogs so they know your voice and smell and don't mistake you for intruders at whom one is obliged to bark to signal their presence.

Neighbourhood highlights

The small town historic center of Massino Visconti can be reached by foot (15 min. downhill walk) but in general you need a car to get around in the area. Massino Visconti has a bank with ATM, a postoffice, a pharmacy, a general drugstore, a bakery, newstand, icecream vendor, hairdresser and beauty salon, as well as a few bars/restaurants. The nearest supermarket is within a 10 min. driving distance and so are a number of small excellent restaurants with genuine food and very affordable prices.
The closer neighborhood on the hill-side is made up of two-story villas and small farmhouses, interwoven with green expanses. The property itself is surrounded by grassing fields on three sides and the road on the fourth, separated by Laurel bushes and Cypress trees. It is a quiet semi-rural neighborhood with fresh mountain air and very little traffic, but expect the silence to be broken by the sound of neighing horses, cowbells, my neighbor's clucking hens from across the road and her rooster signalling sunrise. My own two Briards may on occasion join the animal chorus together with all the neighbors' dogs.
A forest with numerous trails for walking, mountain-biking or horseback riding can be reached by foot in a few minutes. This natural reserve with Chestnut and Birch trees, water creeks, panoramic peaks, and plains full of Heather and Fern extends all the way up to Mottarone (1,500 m). Expect to encounter wandering flocks of sheep, cows and goats herded by dogs, as well as hares, foxes, deers, and wild boars in the midst of the reserve. During autumn, the forest attracts quite a number of both tourists and locals collecting chestnuts or sampling wild mushrooms.
My neighbor up the road organizes horse trekkings. Massino Visconti typically offers a series of events during the summer season, including operas at the castle, theatrical performances, and an annual court yard dinning in its historic center.
The nearest lakeside beach, as well as an open-air public swimming pool, can be reached in a 10 min. down hill drive to Lesa, a small lakeside town with restaurants and bars.

I'm a Dane who after having lived and worked in America and various European countries decided to settle down in the beautiful area of Lago Maggiore, where I spend my time writing, gardening, horseback riding, and playing with my dogs. I look forward to welcoming visitors from abroad or other parts of Italy, introducing them to all the sights, concerts from classical to jazz, nature walks and other organized events, plus great restaurants to sample.
