This charming 1877 home was slated to be demolished at its homestead in Goliad. We were able to rescue and move her here, nestling her in oak trees, safe and sound. Walls were stripped of old sheetrock, windows stripped of lead paint and repainted, bathrooms were added, kitchen was cut out of old mud room. We're happy to share this lovely home and its 12-ft ceilings, 2 fireplaces, front porch w/rockers and views of meadows, wildflowers, wildlife & birds with you!

The space
The Maetze is an 1877 home situated in the heart of the Barnhart Q5 Ranch and Nature Retreat, a 706 acre working ranch. The house can be rented by the room or by the house for 2 night minimum. Each bedroom has private bath. The house features 2 fireplaces, living room, fully stocked kitchen (cook your own meals) and outdoor cooking as well. Guests are invited to enjoy the ranch's manicured hike/bike trails, fishing ponds, and abundant bird and wildlife. Birding is our forte, as we're located on the migratory path and our natural habitat and feeding and watering stations draw in large varieties of species. A Club Cart is available for getting around at $15/day rental as well.

Guest access
The 17 acre guest house compound consists of 3 houses within 100 feet of one another. Each house has its own firepit, outdoor grill, and porches, and ample space has been set aside between homes to allow for privacy. Guests are certainly welcome to interact, but space should be respected. There is rarely an occasion when all houses are active at the same time, unless we have a full booking of a reunion.

We love the rural countryside around us which gives us a dark night sky. Guests here enjoy the 360 degree view of it from the stargazing platform situated on top of our highest hill. Guests will experience the soft breeze, sounds of birds, and coyote serenades at night (as well as the occasional donkey bray in the distance)...

We are a family owned and operated ranch, and my husband Wilfred Korth and I live "just around the bend" from this guest house compound. This concept of sharing the ranch with guests is a fairly new one in Texas, and we're finding it's a wonderful way to meet new and interesting people. It's also a great way to diversify income stream, because if you don't have an oil well in Texas (and we don't), it's not always easy to keep your land. Ours is a special place: we manage the ranch for wildlife, while also running a small herd of cattle and mediterranean miniature donkeys! The donkeys are gentle animals, and our guests love them most of all. On arrival to the ranch we like to give guests a quick overview of their home and a map of the ranch property. We want you to feel comfortable here, so are happy to take you on a tour of the property, then set you free to enjoy the place as if it were your own. Guests are always welcome to interact and participate in the ranch activities - help us call in the cows, brush and feed donkeys, whatever makes you happy!

During your stay
My husband and I live in a separate home about 1/8 mile from the guest house compound. We are available to guests should they need us. We like to give our guests a tour of the ranch so everyone feels comfortable moving around the place. If interested, we offer nature hikes to teach children and adults about the local habitat and wildlife. Guests are also welcome to join us in our cattle "roundup"! Interaction with our mediterranean miniature donkeys is encouraged, though you should probably leave your dog behind for the first visit.
