The neighbourhood

Akaroa is a coastal hamlet nestled on a small promontory over-looking Georges Bay between the bay and ocean beaches, surrounded by St Helens Point Conservation Area.
Situated 8km from St Helens, a 10min drive gives access to ample shops, supermarkets, hospital, hotels, restaurants, cafes, school and recreational facilities.
It is a three minute walk to the beaches and sheltered waters of George's Bay, a ten minute walk, over Peron sand dunes to the three kilometre long sweeping Marouard ocean beach.
St Helens is the northern tip of the “Great Eastern Drive” which follows Tasmania’s east coast south to Orford. The region is famed for local seafood and fine wines. Dotted with National Parks, reserves and conservation areas its beaches are world renowned. Inland, fertile valleys divide extensive forests providing numerous walks and waterfalls to explore.
St Helens links to the “Trail of the Tin Dragon” a celebration of our mining history and connection to Chinese miners and communities of the past.
Our immediate area provides endless recreational opportunities; swimming, surfing, snorkelling, bushwalking and fishing, to list a few. A short drive accesses rain forest walks, Derby’s superb mountain bike trails, aboriginal heritage and the beaches of the Bay of Fires.
We enjoy the mildest climate and the most sunshine days in Tasmania.

Public transport is extremely limited in North East Tasmania and your own transport is essential.

Howard's apartment is very comfortable and well appointed with everything a traveller needs. We appreciated the welcoming biscuits and slices and the fruit and breakfast supplies. Howard assisted us with travel tips on the surrounding areas and we found Akaroa to be a good location for visiting Anson's Bay, Binalong Bay, The Gardens and Mt William National Park. We highly recommend this quiet apartment with excellent Bay views, adjoining the lovely town of St Helens to all discerning travellers.

We had a lovely stay with Janet and Howard. It was the perfect rest stop on our east coast driving adventure. Great location for some lovely unexpected walks before heading up to Bay of Fires. The place was very clean and has everything we needed and more. The jams are to die for!! Thank you, we will recommend!
