Opened in 1801 as the first section of the Simplon road (built during the Napoleonic era to connect Milan to Paris), it presents itself as a wide, straight, tree-lined avenue, prospectively aimed at the Arc de la Pace, according to the neoclassical fashion. The design has obvious references to the Champs-Elysées in Paris. It flows into today's Piazza Firenze, originally a roundabout for the carriages of the nobility.

Today, the avenue has a central carriageway, used by heavy car traffic, and two lateral counter avenues, separated by two strips of public green.

A project by architect Álvaro Siza envisaged the elimination of the central carriageway, which was also to be used as a garden; this intervention, which was never realised, was to be included in the redevelopment of the city streets leading to the Expo 2015 area (the so-called 'via di terra').
