Sanitized. Newly renovated, 1850 barn 3 minutes walk from the Essex River and the Causeway. In the winter it is nice to walk to see Cape Ann's winter lights display. Open concept loft with 1 bedroom with 3 1/2 walls, a fold down full couch in the living area. Private deck over look the marsh across the street. If you have a dog you can rent the downstairs too. Inquire.

The space
The living space is private, light and airy, with a touch of modern.

The 1850's pine floors and beams survived the renovation a couple years ago.

The loft has a modern kitchen filled with granite, a farm sink and a silver bullet refrigerator, the bath is modern with an adventurous massage shower head.

It has three skylights giving the space natural light plus two large windows for a cross breeze and a screened in front door overlooking the porch.

The large handmade stained glass window gives the dining room, living room and kitchen a warm glow.

The furniture is a mix of old and new to fit the style of the barn.

The shower is small but has a very cool shower head for your enjoyment. There is a small water heater in the barn so long showers will need to be spaced out.

The couch in the living room folds down into a full bed. Fresh sheets a pillow and a clean white quilt is in the coffee table for it, if needed.

You can tell you are in the heart of Essex yet the stars shine brightly at night.

Guest access
You are only 300 yeards away to the public dock where you will wander up the Essex river to the great Atlantic ocean.

Do what the locals and "Go Up River" by boat to the back side of Crane Beach (no crowds and lovely seas, we call it Cupcake Island due to its perfection) or travel up the Annisquam River. No boat - bike or drive.

The Barn was designed with you in mind and offers total privacy. There is a staircase going up to the top floor of the barn with a small private deck that cannot be seen from our house. Once you are in the carriage house most windows face in the direction away from the main house giving you the feeling of complete privacy. One window only faces our garden.

The Barn is located about 6 minutes off Rte. 128 making traveling to other towns, cities and states very easy. We are close to NH, Maine, Salem, MA and the sea. Essex is a town that is still untouched. We have no billboards, hardly any street lights, loads of fresh seafood such as clams, mussels, Maine lobster and fish made every way.

Other things to note
21 years old or older is only allowed to book unless you are with a parent.

In the living area there is a leather couch that folds down into a full size sleeping area. It will sleep two children or one adult comfortably. Full bedding is available with a think feather mattress that goes on top of it allowing it to breathe and be super comfortable. The shades on the skylights can be drawn if you want to sleep in or you can sleep under the stars.

The carriage house has free Wi-Fi access, a large TV, a new AC and heating unit, new insulation making the space secure, solid and comfortable.

We are right across the street from the newly renovated and historic town hall on the Great Salt Marsh. At high tide you will have a nice view of the marsh from your private deck.

As you will see from the reviews, the Barn is so private and quiet yet you are within a block or two away from all the activities on the Essex River including many restaurants, Stand up Paddle shops, kayak rentals and antique shops. It is wonderful sitting on the decks of one of the local restaurants and watching all the boats and stand up paddlers making their way around the winding river.

Woodman’s famous fried clam restaurant is also on the avenue, it is in the 1,000 things to do before you die book. There are other fresh options for wonderful fried seafood on the street along with fresh fish and farm to table options.

You can kayak to Crane beach, drive or bike.

I recommend visiting Russell Orchards on the way home from a sea walk to pick up some fresh baked goods or ice cream. They are known for their fresh apple cider donuts. Crane Estate is also a wonderful place to visit.

Essex has many nature walks and good biking options.

We are next door to Manchester by the Sea (Yes, the movie)
Essex is where they filmed Grown ups too. We are also neighbors to Gloucester, Ipswich and Hamilton and not too far to Salem and Newburyport.

During your stay
The hosts live in the main house on the property. They use their own entrance and garden area allowing you privacy and freedom. If you are comfortable with a short meet and greet and the host is home she will help you with your bags and show you a couple tricks of the apartment. If you prefer to just be left to your own devices there is a lock box that the key can be left in. The hosts understand you are there to unwind so they do leave you alone unless you have any questions or needs. Communicating by text at that point is an easy way to ask questions on places to eat, things to do, or apartment needs.
You may see our cat, Cheese, walking around. He had a brother Mac but no longer. He is white with pink ears and so friendly.
