Winner of the 2024 IDA Design award and the 2025 NY Architectural Design Award, the Nest was designed by architect Tsukasa Ono using only local materials. It sits on six acres of wild forest and garden, and is a sublime base to explore Yakushima. We are walking distance to a supermarket, restaurants, cafes, and bakeries, a ten minute drive to world-famous Hirauchi Kaichu onsen, and a twenty minute walk to Onoiada Onsen. We also provide transportation services- please ask.

The space
This is a cozy studio home: one room with two beds, a bunk which is for either a third guest or your luggage, a wonderful sitting space with garden view, separate bathroom, and a kitchenette.

The Nest is 50 meters south of Banyan Kitchen, a local and organic restaurant with international inspiration that serves lunch sets, specialty coffee, home-made dessert, and local craft beers. The Kitchen is open Thursday - Sunday from 1100 to 1500 hrs (LO: 1430), and Nest guests get a 10 percent discount.

We can also arrange airport pickups/ dropoffs and transportation to any location on Yakushima, and can connect you to expert guides. Please write us for details.

Guest access
The whole space is yours. You share the garden with the rental unit to the south.

Other things to note
Yakushima is a wild place, and this is not a sterile environment. The Nest sits within an ongoing agroforestry and land restoration project. We don't use chemical pesticides; our forest and garden thrive with the help of critters like ants and spiders, but we ensure your stay is comfortable with natural, safe pest controls. Monkeys occasionally come through to eat the bananas. You may see deer in the garden and surrounding forest, and racoon dogs as well. We have turkeys and chickens. If you are a light sleeper you may occasionally hear Floyd, the local rooster, at 0600 hrs, but he's quiet the rest of the time. Please let me know if you have any questions.
