The Dairy is a beautiful piece of history set in 21 hectares of rolling pasture. Built by Italian settlers in the 1860s, the stone building has been sensitively renovated to create a studio retreat of rustic calm.

The space
The stone stable has been converted to a studio dwelling, with a reading nook up the ladder on the mezzanine. Architecturally unique, the thick rendered walls and stone floor coupled with abundant natural light make for a serene, stylish space.

Step out from the kitchen into the dairy. Actively used for storage of farm equipment, it remains unrenovated and is complete with stalls for the 19th century cows that once were milked here.

We have designed for simplicity and to encourage a truly restorative break for guests. It's a deliberately low-fi space, and a perfect place to unplug (but rest assured we have phone reception!)

There is a full kitchen for cooking plus a wood fire oven in winter.
Pantry provisions include quality basics like oils, vinegars, s&p, spices, butter, coffee beans & loose leaf tea. Plus our own home-baked shortbread and country loaf. Please use herbs from the garden.

The bathroom has great natural light, a claw foot bath and a separate waterless composting toilet - the 'loveable loo'.

The bookshelf is full of novels, plus gardening, cooking and design books. For music, there are speakers for you to plug into.

Terraces to the north and west encourage hill gazing and kangaroo spotting.

Guest access
In addition to The Dairy, you have access to the whole 21 hectare property. Stroll over the hills and flats, past giant eucalypts along the seasonal creek. You are likely to see lots of birds (and kangaroos too, if you're out at dawn or dusk.)
We provide a map of the property and surrounding neighbourhood so you know where you're walking.
Access to the property is just behind The Dairy, with parking under the hay shed.

Other things to note
Minimum stay is 2 nights. Of course you are welcome to stay longer, and we offer a generous weekly discount.

Location

Yandoit, Victoria, Australia

Yandoit Hills is just over an hour and a half from Melbourne.
It is a very picturesque hamlet, with historic stone buildings all around and sheep ambling over the hills.

From The Dairy it is 20 minutes to Daylesford and 25 minutes to Castlemaine. We know both towns well and supply information on things to do and places to go if you want to venture out.

Bring your walking shoes - The Dairy is perfectly positioned for walks in all directions. Cyclists will enjoy the quiet roads and challenging hills.

Or do absolutely nothing but sit and look out over the valley with a glass of wine in your hand. We are located in a seriously pretty part of Central Victoria and the views are exceptional.

We really look forward to welcoming you to our little patch of countryside. Together my partner Michael and I have a lot of experience taking care of guests. I owned a bar in Melbourne many moons ago and then worked on private yachts before making the switch to country living. Michael has honed his skills as a chef working in top regional restaurants over the past 20 years. With our property in Yandoit Hills, we enjoy balancing our love of hospitality with living quietly in the landscape. We're gardeners, servants of our Jersey cow, Pekin duck breeders, home-grown food feasters and big dreamers.

During your stay
We live over the fence and up the hill in a little house. There are separate driveways and entrances for The Dairy and the main house. Be assured your absolute privacy will be respected - you probably won't see us, unless you want to...! We ourselves prefer to be left to our own devices when holidaying, and we find the majority of our guests have chosen The Dairy precisely because they want a quiet, private time.
Having said that, we are always available to help with any query you may have, little or large. We have both worked in the hospitality industry for years, understand what makes for a good break away, and are here to help.
