A true rural idyll, the APPLE BARN - newly renovated and refurbished - is a comfortable, welcoming and characterful 3-bedroomed cottage, set in a genuinely tranquil, picturesque and idyllic location, nestled amongst woodland down a private drive.

The space

A true rural idyll, the APPLE BARN is set in a peaceful and picturesque location, nestled amongst beautiful woodland down a private drive.

Once part of a large country estate, the APPLE BARN sits peacefully in the five-acre grounds of the owners’ property - Garden Cottage – which is itself set in a beautiful private one-acre walled garden. As its name suggests, the APPLE BARN was once used as a building to store apples and other fruit grown in the walled garden and nearby old orchard. Newly renovated and refurbished, the APPLE BARN is now a comfortable, welcoming and characterful 3-bedroomed cottage, located in a genuinely tranquil and idyllic location, surrounded by trees and wildlife.

Upstairs the APPLE BARN has three bedrooms - including a large and rather stunning double bedroom, and two characterful, cosy and colourful single bedrooms – and a quaint bathroom with bath (no shower). While downstairs enjoys a beautiful large sitting room – with dining area – with double aspect windows overlooking woodland and the APPLE BARN'S own garden on one side, and the goat and chicken paddocks on the other. There is also a bright and homely kitchen – with second dining area – with a back door leading directly into the APPLE BARN’s pretty, enclosed (sole-use) garden, with outdoor table and chairs. Making the APPLE BARN an ideal romantic retreat for a couple, a wonderful base for a family with one or two children (a travel cot is available on request), or indeed a great place to stay for a few friends.

Other things to note

We welcome well-behaved dogs to the Apple Barn, however do ask that you inform us of any four-legged friends when first making a booking request, please. We also ask that your dog is kept on a lead at all times outside - except of course in the Apple Barn's own garden - as we have three cats wandering around (as well as chickens and goats in front of the property). Thank you in advance! Please note, we also have 4 dogs of our own, so when yours and ours get wind of each other there may well be some barking!

While we have homed a number of rescue animals - including a small flock of chickens - we had previously decided not to home a cockerel, in order to avoid possible disturbance to guests. In April 2017 however, a cockerel quite literally turned up at our property, lost and hungry (it is quite likely he had been dumped). What could we do but offer him a home! Therefore please be advised that there may be some early morning crowing, an evocative countryside sound which we sincerely hope will not bother you.

As is often the case in old buildings such as the Apple Barn, the ceilings in the downstairs rooms - notably in the sitting-room - are a little lower than average. Which may be of note for very tall people, particularly where there are beams. The upstairs however, particularly in the striking main bedroom, has very high ceilings.

While the Apple Barn's own garden is completely enclosed, there are a few steps up to it from the cottage and a small slope, so we would recommend when in it that young children are supervised at all times.

Please note too that while the Apple Barn does have wi-fi the broadband speed is slow, and it can be sporadic, so should not be relied upon for work etc. purposes. Being a rural property, mobile phone reception also tends to be poor. Look upon your stay at the Apple Barn as a real getaway from 'modern life'...!

The best of seclusion and central location, a quiet, atmospheric intro to rural England and a great jumping off point for coastal and rural tourism. Cute as a button accommodation with everything one could need, great host and lots of info provided. As overseas visitors loved the animals and local pubs too.

Apple Barn cottage is beautifully situated in the middle of woodland in a very quiet and lovely area. The cottage is clean, comfortable and well equipped. We received a warm welcome from Sally who provided us with eggs laid by her own hens and home-pressed apple juice.

The Apple Barn was delightful and we really enjoyed our week’s stay in this lovely spot set in the woods. Sally and James whose house is next door were excellent hosts, and they made us very welcome. Lovely to receive their fresh eggs and sample their apple juice. There is easy access to London by train, and wonderful gardens and houses to visit close by. We would love to come again, and do more of the same. Paul & Gill

A super little Barn in a lovely secluded location. Sally communicated wonderfully and worked around our timing issues on arrival which was wonderful. We would definitely stay again.

We had a wonderful 7 days at the Apple Barn, the hens and the goats (Arran, Lewis, Harris) were a huge attraction for our girls. My 6 year old especially loved feeding the hens and collecting eggs they had laid, then having them for breakfast. This experience was truly the highlight of our week and special thanks goes to Sally, who patiently and very kindly took the time to explain the goings on in the chicken coop. The cottage itself is lovely, clean, warm and cosy. We particularly loved the double bedroom. A shower in the bathroom is the only thing that was lacking and would make the cottage experience even more perfect. All in all it has been quite a therapeutic and relaxing week spent enjoying the countryside and visiting nearby attractions such as Bewl Water, Bedgebury and the local villages. On arrival, Sally and James' apple juice, cookies and milk in the fridge were gratefully received and were a lovely welcome treat. We also loved the flower arrangements in all the rooms and it was a lovely touch. We will definitely be back sometime soon. Many thanks to wonderful hosts Sally and James.
