Unplug at our remote cabin, perfect for watching wildlife, swimming, ice fishing, snow shoeing, hiking and enjoying nature at its best. Our cabin is equipped with a big wood heater, propane lights and a Canadian made Napoleon BBQ and Smoker. For cooking inside we have a propane stove, cast iron pots and pans and plenty of cups, cutlery and manual coffee makers and grinders.

You will need to bring your own drinking water, bedding and candles for that romantic touch.

The space

Welcome to Porter Lake, an off the grid, open concept, 20x20 ft, rustic cabin, south of Lake Nippising Ontario. The cabin overlooks a private lake and is surrounded by 100 acres of deciduous carolinian forest. Porter Lake is accessible year round by a guided ATV through back farmlands and a corduroy road.

The loft cabin has a large main floor living area with a single bed and wood stove that keeps it cozy. There is a 10 ft farmer’s table and vintage propane stove/oven for meals, pumped well water and basic cooking utensils are provided. A Napolean barbecue off the screened porch overlooking the lake is also available. The cabin is lit with candles or propane lanterns for dark evenings. You will see stars! In the large loft area, there are three more double beds.

The brand new fancy outhouse is a 30-foot walk past the woodshed. A ration of wood is provided as part of your stay. If more is required you can forage your own or buy some from Peter. There are two fire pit areas, one in front of the cabin, with a picnic table for relaxing, the other a short walk through the woods, at swim rock, a natural jumping off area for a swim or boat launch. Porter Lake is completely secluded, surrounded by crown land. You may not need your bathing suit!

Guest access

Our cabin is your cabin. No locks. Enjoy.

Winter

The cabin is atv or snowmobile accessible only. We can provide you with a
ride in and out for $40. It is a really nice 20 minute walk/snow shoe to the cabin. There is no hydro or indoor plumbing which makes
it a perfect winter wonderland.

Your host Peter Learn is only a few miles away and you can arrange to have him provide as much or as little assistance as your desire.

Other things to note

Great secluded, off the grid little cabin. Peter was a good guy. Replaced the empty propane tank for the lights and gave us a ration of wood. The wood burning stove kept us nice and toasty on chilly nights. There are rain boots for the guests to use which came in very handy for the muddy trek to the dock. I'd definitely come back here again.

This was a return visit to the cabin to take advantage of the wonderful fall weather. The description of the cabin is accurate. As long as you are aware that the cabin does not have some modern conveniences (electricity, fridge) it is very private and comfortable, and is a great place if you want a place to get away from things. It all depends what looking for. There is lots to keep busy. Using the manual coffee maker is a great way to start the morning. Be aware that you do need an SUV or truck if you want to drive in. Cell service is sometimes available at the rock. Overall a great time.

When he says think "camping", believe it. Bring your own ATV, 4X4, or an SUV with good ground clearance, or plan on having Peter take you into the camp with his pick-up. The road in is solid but very rough. This is a hunting camp. There is a propane stove and some lamps, cold running water is from a tank above the ceiling that is filled from a gas pump at the well. Bring drinking water and because there is no refrigeration your own ice and cooler, drip-less long candles or flashlights and other lanterns. The washroom is a new out house, and personal washing is at the lake or kitchen sink. There is a wood stove, but plan on purchasing firewood from Peter. The only furniture inside is is cupboards, a rocking chair, the kitchen table and chairs, and the beds. There is an old couch and chair in the screened-in porch. Once you get into camp and settle in you will appreciate the location. Nature lovers and amateur astronomers will adore this place. Starry skies and the view of the Milky Way are spectacular, and we had hazy days. It must be unbelievable in clear weather. Bring a star chart. There are a couple of ATV trains through the forest, and the main driveway for short hikes in the forest. Lots of mushrooms this year due to the wet summer, some edible ones as well. If you are into canoeing, kayaking or fishing he has boats that you can use. Bring your own safety kit and life jacket.

The cabin in the woods is exactly how it is. Our stay was rainy so there was a ton of mosquitoes. Be prepared. The host has numerous pairs of rain boots in the cabin, which we were grateful for because of the muddy surroundings. Overall the cabin is cute and rustic. Nice BBQ within an enclosed veranda and fire pit right in front of the house. Being with no lights is fun, you can see the stars. Lots of additional candles provided plus little lights which were useful for the stairs. Bit of a walk to the lake entrance. Wish there was a dock or something right in front of the cabin. Maybe one day... Rough road to get into the cabin. Thankfully rented a 4x4 pick up truck. It's the only way otherwise the host will have to bring you in. I suggest renting a truck so you are free to come in and out. I wouldn't go there with little kids. Most of the beds are upstairs and the stairs are steap (the beds comfy). Peter, I would suggest adding a rail to make it safer. Outhouse is near and in good condition. Otherwise outdoorsy people will love it! You have the lake to yourself, quiet, peaceful nights. Unplugged. Fishing rods and boats provided, but can only catch small perch. Must see is the Restoule Provincial Park. Fishing is amazing there. Must do Fire Tower trail. Stunning views of the lake below.

My boyfriend and I stayed the weekend at the cabin and had an absolutely wonderful time. It is perfect for those wanting to get away from it all for a true break. Peter was so nice and accommodating and understanding of all of our questions. The cabin is rustic but cozy and equipped with all the basics, and the lake is very private (with canoe included). We are definitely planning on returning!
