After a long plane trip from Germany, I headed directly to Drus' place and I couldn't have had a better start in New Zealand. Drus was very kind, interested and very helpful. I discorvered Auckland by Drus' bike(s) which he kindly lent me and additionnaly and most notably, Drus showed me around some very nice places and took me out to a friends party. One negative remark just for Drus: the bed was too comfortable, so I 'had' to sleep very well and even cured my jetlag directly ;)

Drus was a wonderful host and extremely hospitable and helpful. Once I arrived we cycled off to the Lido to have a refreshing swim. Drus introduced me to the other delights of the local area such as the French Market. There are countless other things Drus did to help me get established in Auckland. He is a great guy and I would thoroughly recommend his lovely Parnell pad as a place to kip, not least because it is excellently presented.

Drus was a great host! The bed was quite comfortable (especially after a 13 hour flight) and he had many suggestions on what to do/see. He even took us to one of his favorite local restaurants (we were HAAAANGRY after that long journey) and it was delicious! And best of all, the location is perfect. You can easily get anywhere you need to go in the city by foot or bus. Aaaaanndd, the open market (French Market, I think) is right down the hill. Definitely check it out if your stay falls on a Sat or Sun. Thank you Drus for your hospitality :)

Drus is super relaxed and friendly. He had no problem with me arriving late on the first night. Staying in Parnell was really handy for the museum and very close to the centre of town. Plus it's a cute little neighbourhood in its own right. Enjoyed my stay!

Having just arrived on the bus from Whangarei, the Sawmill Brewery beer that was offered upon my arrival as Drus and I did our meet-and-greet was very welcome, softening my landing considerably. Drus was a wonderfully charming and erudite host and his flat reflects the enviably creative lifestyle that he’s carving out for himself (cf. sen(URL HIDDEN) The room in which I stayed was well-furnished his “bedroom eyes” pillowcases, a framed NZ Herald headline (“Keeper Killed By Elephant She Loved”), one of his(?) butterfly-wing towels, and a stack of nicely intriguing books. As I was arranging the booking, he attempted to buy me a ticket to that night’s Rolling Stones concert and, although those didn’t end up working out, he was nice enough to secure tickets to see The Blind Date Project — which somehow seemed more apropos for an Airbnb booking — at the Silo Theatre. Afterwards, right next door, a delicious Japanese dinner at Tanuki’s Cave. I found myself developing quite a serious crush on Auckland as it reminded me a bit of my hometown of Seattle crossed with the tropical foliage of Hawaii. The Parnell neighborhood seemed especially swell, with mix of elegant traditional and eclectic modern houses, interesting design stores, and a great Sunday morning farmers’ market (delicious breakfast of a “flat white” from The Black Shack and a ham-on-the-bone roll from Fiona’s Fabulous Foods). Had a good wander around the city before my flight back to SFO and managed to catch “Light Show” at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, which had some of the usual-suspect heavy hitters (James Turell, Jenny Holzer, Olafur Eliasson, Dan Flavin, SF’s own Jim Campbell) as well as some great pieces by artists I hadn’t seen before (Carlos Cruz-Diez, Ann Veronica Janssens, Conrad Shawcross). Overall, I felt like I got to experience a lovely sample, albeit brief, of Auckland life via Drus’ home, conversation, and recommendations. I can’t wait to make it back to New Zealand for a longer stay.

This was my first time using airbnb and it was a positive experience. Drus is a really great host. He is honest, patience and caring. Drus invited me to join him and his friends for dinner and came up with ideas about what I could do during my stay. It didn't take long time until I felt like I was living there.

Drus - arty, quiet, friendly guy. Born & bred in Auckland.
I like indie music & film, food, running and yoga.
I've got around France (Lille, the Rhône), England (Bath, Henley, London), the US (Boston, NYC, SF), Amsterdam & Patagonia. After all that I know how hard it is to set up camp in a new field, so I'm happy to help you with that. I might be able to help with contacts here too.
I work in creative fields: I design gifts, I'm writing a book, and coach rowing.
