The Shearers' Cottage is a quaint yet comfortable two-bedroom cottage nestled into farmland in the pristine high country, an easy 10-15 minute drive from Oberon.

Built in the mid 1900s to accommodate farm workers, the cottage - which has recently been refurbished and tastefully decorated - provides a secluded haven for those seeking a peaceful and authentic rural experience.

The space
The Shearers' Cottage has been recently refurbished, but remains an authentic example of farm lodgings of the era (mid-1900s): unassuming yet warm, cosy, and tastefully decorated. Its idyllic setting offers expansive views over the surrounding farmland and forests, to the distant mountains beyond.

Featuring two bedrooms (one king, one queen), a bathroom with walk-in shower and twin-basins, a new kitchen and open-plan dining and living space, the cottage is perfect for up to four guests.

Guests can expect to see (and hear) sheep, cows, horses, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, the swallows and willy wagtails which are fond of roosting in the barn, and the resident ring tailed possums which sometimes scurry across the roof as they move between their daytime drey and the trees where they feed by night.

Guest access
Part of the original shearing quarters and situated at the heart of the property, guests will have exclusive use of the Shearers' Cottage, its adjoining carport and yard.

Guests are welcome to explore the property, understanding that Wilga Downs is a working farm with livestock, wildlife, waterholes, and other factors that require care for personal safety. All gates must be left as they're found.

Other things to note
The Shearers' Cottage is part of Wilga Downs, a working sheep and cattle property. Tucked beside the original shearing shed and sheep yards, it offers guests a private, peaceful slice of the farm.

The farm also includes a homestead and another barn at the opposite end of the property, which hosts the occasional wedding or event.

We provide a complimentary bag of firewood, additional wood can be purchased prior to arrival.

Pets are subject to approval — due to having livestock including young lambs and calves, we don't allow some breeds (eg. hunting & herding breeds, guard dogs etc.). For the comfort of allergy-sensitive guests, cats are not allowed.

While the cottage is part of a farm, for safety and biosecurity reasons we don't offer animal handling/interaction. Guests are welcome to observe livestock from a safe distance.

The Cottage is strictly limited to four individuals maximum, we cannot make exceptions.

No EV charging due to the limited capacity of the electrical system. There is a charging station in Oberon.

Neighbourhood highlights

The Shearers' Cottage is tucked away in a quiet corner of the farm, nestled within the rolling hills and countryside. The 'neighbourhood' consists of farms and forests, while the 'neighbours' are mostly sheep, cows, kangaroos and other wildlife. The nearest shops, cafes, restaurants, pub etc. are in the nearby township of Oberon — a 10-15 minute scenic drive "just down the road" as we say in rural Australia :)

Other nearby towns include Rockley, Tarana, and O'Connell — all with lovely country pubs, and all about 35 minutes away. The larger regional centres of Bathurst and Lithgow are about 50 minutes drive, while Orange is about 1.5 hours drive.

Taralga and Millthorpe are two small towns that are worth a visit, each is about an hour's drive, with beautiful country scenery along the way.

Mayfield Garden and cafe is a local highlight, just ten minutes away. Jenolan Caves is about half an hour away.
