I moved to Melbourne in 1996 and I reckon that Fitzroy is the best place to base yourself to explore Melbourne, and our street is in the best part of Fitzroy. We'll leave a little package with maps and loads of local tips for you and secret spots to visit so you'll be able to fit right in like a local and get the best out of our wonderful neighbourhood.
Fitzroy is the uber cool little neighbourhood that is perched right on the very edge of the city centre and is famous for having some of the best restaurants, art and shopping in Australia.
From our place you can stroll to Paris end of Collins Street in the city, the Princess Theatre, Bourke Street, Chinatown and the shopping & restaurant end of the CBD through the gardens.
Or you can stay super local for the ridiculously good food and cocktails to be had on Gertrude, Brunswick & Smith Streets which are 2, 5 and 7 minute walks from us.
Slowpoke cafe, Lune Croissanterie, Marion's, Shop Ramen, Bad Frankie, Añada, Belle's Hot Chicken, Liberty Bar, Moon Under Water, Grub Food Van, Mario's, The Everleigh and Cutler & Co are just some of our favourite picks.
You can also walk west through the gardens to the riches of Carlton and Lygon Street like Market Coffee, Di Chirico Bakery & Milk the Cow and the fabulous Readings Bookstore.
For the kids there's the library, and 3 different playgrounds right on the doorstep, the world heritage listed Carlton Gardens and of course The Melbourne Museum, which is basically the world's best indoor play centre. Luna Park and the beach are an easy tram ride away and there's a choice of 3 swimming pools within walking distance.
TIP: to travel around the city for free just walk one block to the southern end of Carlton Gardens and you're within the free tram zone.
We provide Myki cards for you which should include enough credit for one trip, you can top them up at seven elevens and convenience stores etc
TripGo or Embark are both great apps to find your way around Melbourne via public transport, Uber, bicycle, taxi or on foot
Route 96 tram goes south to Bourke Street Mall in the city or north to Brunswick East along Nicholson Street (closest stop is 1 minute walk away).
Route 11 tram goes to Collins Street in the city, or along Brunswick Street to North Fitzroy & Thornbury (2 minute walk)
Route 12 on Gertrude Street, to to Northcote, Preston Markets or Bourke St in the city (5 minute walk)
Parliament Station (city circle train) is a 15 minute walk
Other things to note
We love our place - but here's the stuff that we think might not work for everyone. Our bed very comfortable, but it's low, so not good for our older parents for example. Our bathroom is very basic and the hot water heater is good for one good long shower, but then you've got to wait a few minutes for it to heat up. There's no lift, doorman or security entrance and our place in on the second floor.
Our house is a practical family home, so it's great if you want to relax somewhere pleasant, sunny and creative and not worry about breaking precious antiques - but it's not going to suit someone looking for pristine surfaces and luxury fittings.
There's no smoking allowed in the building at all.
It's not suitable for entertaining or events
- We have parking for one car on site for no extra charge. Also worth noting that unless you're planning suburban jaunts we are so inner-city that a car may be more hassle than its worth. There are car-share services nearby too.
- This is a no smoking building. There is absolutely no smoking anywhere at all in the apartment, on the balcony, in the building or within the boundary of the lot. They take this very seriously in our building, if you do light up expect to find people banging on the front door with torches and pitchforks. There's a nice pub down the street with a beer garden where one can smoke in comfort.
Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund, including service fees.
We met and fell in love at the Builders Arms 15 years ago and we’ve lived here ever since. Now we’re raising our young kids here.
We think this patch of Fitzroy is one of the very best bits of Melbourne. It’s right next to the nicest part of the CBD with the museum, IMAX, Carlton Gardens and parks leafy trees galore. All the delights of Fitzroy, Carlton & Collingwood are on the doorstep and it's never far to stroll to find a cold beer or an excellent coffee.
We want you to relax, soak up the fabulous and enjoy living like a local when you stay with us.
