As part of the ground rules for Hosts, you should provide guests with the info they need to access your place at check-in and throughout their stay. Successful Hosts often offer self check-in, using devices like smart locks, keypads or key safes, and they have a backup plan in case something goes wrong.

Creating an easy check-in

Set up a simple check-in and test it to confirm it’ll work for every guest, every time.

  • Use the Airbnb app to add step-by-step check-in instructions to your listing. The app will ask you to provide photos of your check-in process and short instructional notes, which guests can easily access.

  • Enter your correct address and pin location. If your place is out of the way or there’s no phone service nearby, include precise directions to prevent confusion.

  • Send check-in instructions three days in advance. Confirm with guests that they’ve received them and ask if they have any questions.

  • Be available at the time of check-in. If anything goes wrong, you’ll want to be reachable so you can troubleshoot right away.

Replacing keys with other options

One way to make check-in easy is to install a smart lock or keypad that allows guests to unlock the front door with a code. Prior to each check-in, you can change the code and message the guest their unique number.

Regularly double-check that all systems are working. Whether you’re relying on devices or greeting guests in person, it’s best to have a key safe with a backup key.
