All about Port Sorell
Port Sorell is a small oceanside town on the northwest coast of Tasmania, across the Bass Strait from the southernmost point of mainland Australia. Originally planned as a major port, a stream of bushfires in the 19th century made it impossible for the city to expand in the same way as nearby Devonport. This tragic turn of events has allowed Port Sorell to retain its ruggedly beautiful landscapes behind the sand dunes and to stay true to its fishing and food-producing roots.
Sunsoaked beaches, rolling sand dunes, and fresh seafood are just a few of the things that draw visitors here from the mainland and beyond. The surrounding area is a nature lover’s paradise, with an abundance of outdoor activities to choose from, from taking a refreshing dip at Hawley Beach to exploring Narawntapu National Park on the other side of the bay and looking out for wombats and Tasmanian devils.
What are the top things to do in Port Sorell?
Penguin spotting
Make your way down to Lillico Beach to see the smallest species of penguin in the world. Also known as fairy penguins, these little creatures are a mere 30 centimetres tall. Every evening, they make their way back to the beach for a good night’s rest. Take up a spot on the viewing platform and you’ll be rewarded with a gorgeous night sky and a view you won’t soon forget.
The Beach
Port Sorell offers a multitude of water activities all year round. If you prefer to be on the water, you can fish, sail, kayak, or canoe around the coast. Surfers also flock to the beaches, and there are many places where you can rent a surfboard if you don’t have your own. Of course, there’s also the option of soaking up the sun in a comfy beach chair with a book in hand and watching the action unfold.
Wine and chocolate
Port Sorell and the surrounding areas are famous for their wine and chocolates, with a variety of vineyards and luxury chocolate producers to peruse. Hop in the car and take a tour of the region’s hotspots, readying yourself for an experience of pure indulgence as you sample locally produced drinks and sweets.
