Your questions answered

What is Airbnb.org?

Airbnb.org is an independent, publicly-supported nonprofit organization that partners with nonprofits to provide people with emergency housing in times of crisis.

Through the Airbnb Open Homes and Frontline stays initiatives, Airbnb has worked with communities to help people in times of need since 2012. Now, Airbnb is establishing Airbnb.org as an independent organization to build upon these efforts and help even more people.

Airbnb.org is an independent organization with an independent board of directors. It’s an approved tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to organizations with 501(c)(3) status may be tax deductible.

Airbnb is covering the operating costs of Airbnb.org so community donations go further in supporting people in times of crisis.

Anyone with an entire home or apartment to offer can host free stays for people in times of crisis through Airbnb.org. Right now, shared rooms and private rooms are not eligible for the program.

Disaster relief

In the aftermath of a disaster, there is a critical need for emergency housing. In this instance, people impacted by the disaster can submit a request for temporary housing through our disaster relief page. After verification, they may book a free stay offered by hosts supporting Airbnb.org directly for themselves.

To be eligible for emergency housing, guests must reside in the impacted area. Both permanent residents and travelers with a confirmed hotel or rental reservation are eligible. Guests are required to provide proof of address . Once they submit their request, their information will be reviewed by Airbnb.org or its service providers before they can book.

Relief workers must be affiliated with a nonprofit partner of Airbnb.org and referred to the program by their organisation in order to book.

Refugee housing

There are many barriers for people who are trying to rebuild their lives in a new place. Before settling into permanent housing, refugees and asylum-seekers need to finalize paperwork, search for jobs, and find a temporary place to stay. In this instance, a staff member from a nonprofit will book an Airbnb.org stay on behalf of the guest. All guests have the legal status of a recognized refugee entitled to international protection as determined by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and/or have begun the process of seeking asylum in the country where they currently reside.
