House of Schist in the center of Portugal

Three schist houses being restored at the village of Cunqueiros, in the municipality of Proença-a-Nova, form the Casas da Encosta project. Here it’s possible to relive the life history and culture of the region’s people in the comfort of a typical Portuguese village. According to the owner, Nuno Caldeira, the houses are being restored following the local construction tradition where schist, clay and wood are featured. One of them, Casa da Lagariça, has already opened.

Casa do Linho is a charmingly restored 3 bedroom stone farmhouse in the picturesque village of Vale de Souto. It's one of the oldest houses in the village built over 400 years ago. There are several river beaches close by which are perfect for a dip in the heat of the Portuguese sunshine. 200m up the road is the local cafe shop. Sertã and Oleiros are 10mins drive away, with larger supermarkets and some excellent restaurants.
