Your guide to Megalong Valley

All About Megalong Valley

Nestled deep in the Blue Mountains, Megalong Valley derived its name from the Aboriginal word thought to mean “valley under the rock.” While the view of the verdant valley from elsewhere in the Blue Mountains is spectacular, the drive down into it, through lush rainforests with soaring trees and huge ferns, is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Megalong Valley is home to rich farmland and dense forests with epic hiking trails, including the challenging Six Foot Track, a 44-kilometre trail that hosts a competitive endurance event every year. But there are also plenty of shorter walks available if you’re looking to kill an hour or two. Or you may spend a day here wine tasting or visiting the Megalong Valley’s famous tea rooms. The valley is also a top spot in the region for horseback riding, and there are options available for people with various levels of experience.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Megalong Valley

Spring is one of the most beautiful and temperate times to visit the Megalong Valley, with warm weather and blooming wildflowers. Many of the private gardens in the Blue Mountains open their gates during the season. Autumn is another popular time to visit, with the changing colours throughout the valley making for some beautiful scenery. Summer can bring hot and humid days, though the Megalong Valley is cooler than the coast if you want to beat the heat. In winter, Sydneysiders come to the valley for cosy getaways and Christmas in July celebrations. The average temperature during winter is around 13 degrees Celsius, which is slightly warmer than other parts of the Blue Mountains, and occasionally the valley also sees snow.

Top things to do in Megalong Valley

Horseback riding

Megalong Valley is known for its horseback riding, and there are several tours and guided adventures to choose from, including some that offer twilight rides. Traverse ridge lines, lush gullies, and open pastures and experience all the beauty and diversity that the Megalong Valley has to offer. On your way, you’ll have the chance to spot kangaroos, lyrebirds, koalas, and other wildlife.

The Six Foot Track

One of Australia’s most famous hikes, the Six Foot Track spans 44 kilometres and runs from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. It takes around three days to complete. While mostly well-maintained, the track is quite challenging in parts and isn’t recommended for less experienced hikers. An original section of the track was once six-feet wide to cater for horse-drawn carriages, hence its name. Every year, the track hosts the Six Foot Track Marathon — a not-for-profit race that started in 1984 to raise funds for the Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service, and now attracts over 850 keen runners.

Wine tasting

There are two popular wineries in the area, both of which offer beautiful views of the Megalong Valley escarpment. Cellar door tastings are often available on weekends, when you’re likely to find samples of Viognier, Pinot Grigio, Pinot, Shiraz, as well as the Prosecco-style wine for which the area is known. The Six Foot Track passes by the wineries, which are a popular detour.
