Where do locals hang out?

Kahului is located in Central Maui and is considered a main hub on the island thanks to its airport, supermarkets, and straight shot to popular vacation spots such as Wailea’s beach resorts. Kahulu is a great place to experience everyday life on Maui, and the nearby town of Wailuku showcases real mom-and-pop shops, a historic downtown on Market Street, and beautiful natural attractions such as Iao Valley State Park. For a real community feel, attend the weekly Maui Swap Meet for locally made wares and souvenirs.

Another place you’ll find plenty of locals: Makawao. The ranching and arts community in Upcountry Maui is most known for its Hawaiian cowboys, but there’s more to this part of Maui than rodeo competitions. It’s also the island’s art community, where meditation, pottery classes, and more offer locals and visitors to tap into their creative side.

What are the best things to do on Maui?

Surf, snorkel, and swim in Lahaina and Kihei

From snorkeling with turtles off Molokini on boat tours from Kihei to sunset sails from the beach in Lahaina, these towns are some of the best jumping off points for fun activities on the water. Surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, and more can keep you busy for most of the day. Top it off with a visit to the Maui Brewing Company at sunset.

Capture the Aloha Spirit in Kula

Hikes to the Haleakala crater, farm tours, visits to animal and bee sanctuaries, ukulele lessons, and more connect you to what makes island life here so special. Kula is a culinary destination on Maui, thanks to the exotic produce that thrives here. Don’t miss the Church of the Holy Ghost.

Arts and mindfulness in Makawao

Walk the labyrinths of the Sacred Garden, throw pottery in an artist’s studio, and take some time to peruse the shops and galleries of the downtown. Don’t miss the cream puffs at the historic bakery, established in 1916.

What beaches do locals love on Maui?

Hanakao'o Beach

Also known as “Canoe Beach,” where outrigger canoe races are typically held on weekends, connects to the more popular Ka'anapali Beach. You can easily walk from one beach to the other, but this is where you’ll find local families barbecuing and hanging out.

Baldwin Beach Park

Located on the North Shore, this Paia beach is perfect for a relaxing day of swimming and bodysurfing. Baldwin Cove and Baby Beach offer calmer waters, making it a great option for families.

Keawakapu Beach

Situated between Kihei and Wailea, this beach is great for snorkeling. It’s only about a half mile from Wailea, making this a nice reprieve for those looking to take a break from the resort area.
