The space
Watch as sailboats navigate Tutukaka Harbour from the furnished balcony at this modern villa in northern New Zealand. Feel the cool sea breeze as you finish off your morning espresso. Then, head inside for a quick bite at the breakfast bar before heading out to explore New Zealand. A great place to snap a few pictures and work on your tan is Whale Bay Beach, named for its most famous visitors.

Designed with the view in mind, Makoha Retreat’s floor-to-ceiling windows let you fully enjoy the harbour, especially in the unobstructed corner of the living room. An open-concept layout makes it easy to gather the group for dinner, casual hangouts, and even while someone is working away in the kitchen. After dinner, treat the group to a locally crafted bottle of wine in the terrace lounge.

When the sun has set, get behind the wet bar and unleash your inner mixologist, turn up the sound system, or let the entertainer in your group show off on the piano. Later, when it cools off, move the party to the hot tub and melt any lingering stress away. In the morning, burn some of those calories off with the exercise equipment or take the kayak or stand-up paddleboard out for a spin.

Feeling adventurous? It’s time to try scuba diving at the Poor Knights Islands. Forged by an ancient volcano, this series of islands is home to a vast array for sea creatures and corals, as well as the world’s largest sea cave, Rikoriko. Keep going to Sandy Bay and take a surfing lesson at one of the country’s most popular spots. If you’re not into surfing, the beach is perfect for picnics and horseback riding.
