The space
A World Heritage Site and world-class architecture come together at the gorgeous Arc en Ciel. Located just outside the oceanfront town of Soufriere, this five-bedroom St. Lucia villa looks out over the Caribbean Sea and the dramatic slopes of the UNESCO-designated Pitons. A traditionally inspired ambience and a full staff round out the charms of this luxury vacation rental.

Your holiday at Arc en Ciel includes the services of a chef, housekeeper and gardener, and nighttime security. A garden filled with tropical trees and flowers is a private setting in which to enjoy expansive terraces overlooking the sea, an outdoor bar and an infinity pool that stretches under a waterfall into a stone cave. At the end of each idyllic tropical day, select a bottle from the wine cooler and heat up the barbecue for an al-fresco dinner facing the water.

Architect Lane Pettigrew laid out the villa as a series of pavilions linked by verandas, taking advantage of the sunny weather and balmy temperatures. The hand-chipped stone exterior walls were inspired by the forts that originally dotted the island, while wooden railings and jalousie shutters are hallmarks of Caribbean style. Inside the open-plan living and dining room, vaulted ceilings and handmade furniture from Honduras are classically tropical and utterly comfortable. Though chef service is included, there is a fully equipped kitchen as well.

Dramatic scenery, palm-fringed beaches and surprising attractions like restorative mud baths make St. Lucia a wonderful destination for an off-the-beaten-path family vacation or a honeymoon away from it all. Tap into island life on Soufriere, the former capital, as you sample the shopping and dining, plan an adventurous hike around the Pitons, or go snorkeling or diving. Or simply relax at the aptly named Sugar Beach, a 5-minute walk from the villa.
