“Our family of 5 had an AMAZING time at Rick and Dana's place. What a beautiful place it is in the rolling hills just outside of Decorah. We stayed in mid-June and minus one day of rainy weather it was goregous. Both Rick and Dana welcomed us while they worked in and around their home (they live above the apartment we rented below). Both are easy to chat with and seemed very gracious to have us there. Our kids (10,9,6) loved the place! As well as our black lab dog who swam in the pond almost the entire time! The apartment was just enough space for us - two bedrooms, kitchenette and a large bathroom. We spent most of our time on the beautiful covered deck in their chairs and hammock. Beautiful views of wildlife and their horses. It's an easy drive into town for all of Decorah's sites - we visited the trails, springs, caves, etc. - as well as their many breweries, restaurants and downtown shopping. Our kids loved counting all the deer on our trips in/out of town. We would definitely come back!”
Welcome to Trout River Log Cabin, a rustic 19th century Norwegian-built log house nestled in the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa, just seven miles from downtown Decorah, or three from TG Brewing. The cabin is open seasonally from April to October. Our family farm with its many acres of perennial grass fields, timber, and meandering Trout River is absolutely gorgeous. And while you're at it be sure to check out our other overnight stay, Decorah House, located five blocks from downtown Decorah.
“My stay at Trout Run cabin was the most peaceful spot I've ever stayed. I spent most of my time there on the porch with a cool breeze, gorgeous views and all the birds that came to visit. Even in the pouring rain the first evening, the sound of the rain on the metal roof was so peaceful. I loved it! The second night, the sky was clear and the changing colors of sunset were wonderful. The cabin is such a work of love and dedication. What a story it tells! The bed was very comfortable, the shower nice and hot, the A/C much appreciated! It was a quick drive down to Decorah where I explored and visited many of the parks. Downtown is a wonderful place too. But the highlight was definitely the cabin and getting away from the worries of our world. Thank you, Paul and Nathan, for a great place to retreat to! (I loved the chickens and cows too!)”
Enjoy the restoration of our charming and cozy caboose! Complete with all the amenities you'll need and more! Linens and towels, dishes for cooking, barware for cocktailing, and even the original conductor's chairs to watch the sunset over the horse pasture!
“Jim's place was a fun visit! We are from the city and enjoyed the quietness of the country. If you are expecting a hotel room stay this place may not be for you. But if you are wanting an experience that is unique go for it! The bed was comfortable for us. Jim met us when we got there and was very friendly! The space of the Caboose is very cute, comfotable, and has everything you need. I'd say if you are over 5'10-5'11 the bed may be tight in the loft area. The horses were fun to spend time with on the property. Apples were not in season while we visited but luckily had some of our own that we fed them. Recommend!”
