Built in 1857, the wonderful Blythcliffe is listed as an Historic Place Category 1 with Heritage New Zealand, and is one of Akaroa's oldest and most loved original houses. We are set within three acres of private, stunning gardens within the Historic Area of Akaroa, and are an easy, short, flat walk to all of our restaurants and attractions:)
We operate within a low-waste, plastic free ideal, and provide quality toiletries from Trilogy and other wonderful, organic New Zealand companies.

The space
Built in 1857, Blythcliffe is a Grade 1 listed building with Heritage New Zealand. The Rose Room is a sunny, comfortable room in the main house for two. Your private bathroom is right next door to your room.
It is possible to book a second queen room with The Rose Room, these two rooms will share the same bathroom, extra cost applies, please inquire.
Accessed by an old, steepish, staircase, you will have access to our tea room and our lovely balcony overlooking the croquet lawn & gardens, the perfect spot for breakfast or a glass of wine in the sun with the birds!

Guest access
You will have full access to our beautiful gardens, including our croquet lawn, petanque terrace and the Blythcliffe private forest, two acres of native bush protected by a conservation order for many years and therefore containing many spectacular examples of native trees, plants and birds. Some trees are hundreds of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, adjacent to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed. Feed our tame eels and marvel at the song and antics of the many unique species of NZ birds. Or just lie in the sun and enjoy the peace and privacy of our beautiful garden.

Other things to note
If you are planning a nature cruise on our beautiful harbour or dolphin swimming during your stay, please book in advance as they often book out during the busy summer months.

John and Lesley purchased Blythcliffe in 2013, and moved there from Wellington, on NZ's North Island, after totally falling for this magnificent house and grounds, and the historic village of Akaroa.
We are both well traveled around NZ, and have visited many beautiful places in the South Pacific and Australia.
Lesley came to live in NZ from the UK in her early 20's and enjoys a rich career as a costume designer in the film, TV and theatre world.
John is a true blue Kiwi, and is known as one of NZ's most experienced production designers and art directors, again in the film, TV and theatre scenes.
We are relaxed hosts who love good company and conversation, we'd love to meet you!
