Connecting a smart lock to Airbnb when using a Property Management System

If you manage your listings using a third-party Property Management System (PMS) that supports sharing smart lock codes with Airbnb, you can automate the check-in process for your guests.

This feature streamlines the secure delivery of access codes, allowing you to connect your smart locks to Airbnb without manually managing listing details on the platform.

How it works

The integration between your PMS and Airbnb acts as a bridge to automate the check-in process:

  1. Airbnb sends the guest's reservation information directly to your connected PMS
  2. Your PMS generates a unique, automated door code specifically for that reservation
  3. Airbnb securely transmits this code directly to your guest via the Airbnb app and their confirmation emails

By showing the door codes within the Airbnb reservation, guests can enjoy a reliable check-in.

Important limitations to keep in mind

While this integration seamlessly delivers codes, it’s designed to let your PMS maintain ownership of the actual smart lock management. Here are a few limitations to be aware of:

  • No real-time status: Airbnb doesn't have access to your lock's real-time status, meaning you won't see battery levels or connectivity (offline) alerts on Airbnb
  • No code management: Airbnb can't directly manage or alter the codes; all code generation and management is handled by your PMS
  • One lock per listing: Hosts can only share one smart lock’s code per listing through Airbnb; if your listing has multiple locks, only the first lock’s information will be shared with the guest through this integration

Note: It's important to monitor your smart locks through your PMS to make sure they’re functioning properly.

Providing backup instructions and codes

Hosts using this integration must provide backup entry instructions during setup to prevent guest lockouts if the smart lock fails. Your PMS may also be able to send a time-unrestricted backup door code to guests.

What to do if your PMS doesn't support sharing codes

If your PMS doesn’t support sharing smart lock codes with Airbnb, you can still use smart locks for your listings. Consult your PMS's documentation or support resources for more information.
