Value Added Tax (VAT) on experiences and services and how it applies to you

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a tax assessed on the supply of goods and services. In certain countries, such tax may be referred to as Goods and Services Tax (GST), service tax or consumption tax (collectively referred to as 'VAT' in this article).

Depending on your country of residence or location of the experience or service, Airbnb is required to apply VAT to the Airbnb service fee on your reservation in countries that tax electronically supplied services.

Adding your VAT or Tax Identification (ID) Number

In certain countries, you may not be charged VAT on the Airbnb Experience or Service service fee if you are registered for VAT. However, you may still need to self-assess/declare VAT with your VAT return depending on your local VAT laws.

To let us know you are registered for VAT, add your VAT or Tax ID to your account in the Taxes section of your account. Find out more about detailed VAT ID format information.

For hosts

  1. Go to Account > Taxes
  2. Select Add VAT ID number
  3. Complete the VAT ID form

VAT may be charged on the host service fee for an experience or service reservation. If a reservation is changed, VAT adjusts to reflect any change in the service fee.

Depending on your country of residence or location of your experience or service, you may need to assess VAT on the experience or service you provide to guests. We encourage you to consult your tax advisor if you need assistance assessing VAT on the services you provide.
