The Cottage at Blue Door Farm is a unique, fully off grid strawbale cottage, but its more than just a place to stay... its an experience like no other! Being in a strawbale building is like being embraced by the building, it truly is a special feeling that is best felt not described.

The space
Blue Door Cottage is a unique, cozy straw bale cottage, cleverly built from mostly recycled materials. The building is highly efficient with thick, heavily insulated walls and ceiling. Perfect for those looking to experience the joy of off-grid, sustainable living, the cottage features the creature comforts of modern appliances combined with old style, farm house charm. This uniquely quaint place offers guests an ideal location to relax, recharge and enjoy.

The property is powered entirely by solar energy. Winter rainwater is collected and stored for use throughout the year. Wastewater is naturally filtered and repurposed using a multi-stage reed bed filtration system. The toilets at Blue Door Farm are professionally designed composting systems. Firewood for heating is harvested from the property and every effort is made to minimize waste and make use available natural resources.

You will be supplied with generous breakfast provisions including eggs from our chooks, locally sourced bacon, fresh bread, organic muesli and yogurt as well as a selection of seasonal fruits & vegetables from our organic garden and orchard when available.

The kitchen and dining area is equipped with gas cook tops and microwave. There is a compact, under-counter fridge and freezer. The cupboards contain everything needed for basic meal preparation and serving. There is a dining table with seating for 4 and corner cabinet containing crockery and cutlery and space for storing food should you wish to cook a meal. Waste and recycling bins are contained in the cupboard under the sink. Also included is a compost bin. We invite guests make use of this for any food scraps which will be fed to the chickens or composted for use in the garden.

The living and sleeping area features a luxurious Queen-sized bed, fitted in beautiful linens. There is a 2 seater cozy leather lounge and additional seating. There is a small ‘pot-belly’ wood-burning heater in the lounge area complete with provisions for warming winter fires. There is wi-fi available and the TV is internet connected with streaming apps available. There are a selection of books and magazines in the entertainment cupboard as well as board games and a deck of cards. There is an audio system that can be paired with your devices via Bluetooth.

There is also a single bed available in the additional small bedroom.

The bathroom is simple yet elegant with a shower (fed by rainwater), hand basin and a Nature Loo Classic Composting toilet system. These systems are simple, clean and pleasant to use with no odor whatsoever. The system is ventilated and does not require flushing.

Guest access
The cottage is located on our family property, you will have exclusive use of the cottage during your stay. You are welcome to take a walk around the 10 acre property however we do ask that guests respect the privacy of the main residence. Please see the map provided.

Other things to note
Please note that as we generate all of our own energy here at Blue Door Farm - all water is supplied by the rain, our electricity comes from solar and we utilise professionally designed natural waste and water recycling systems… all provisions from toilet paper to body-wash have been chosen with sustainability and our environment in mind. We would love for you to really enjoy and indulge in your stay, while also consuming mindfully. Whilst our off grid solar power and battery system is quite robust it does have limitations, if you are going to require plugging in anything during your stay (other than charging devices such as phones, laptops etc) please check with us before doing so.
