In Nov 2018, I attended this experience and had the most wonderful time. Since then, I carried the same sketchbook in my travels and would add to it whenever possible. In July 2019 my rental car was broken into. My luggage with the sketchbook inside, was stolen and never recovered. I swore then that I would return to London and attend another of Sophie's wonderful live figure drawing sessions. Everything was what I hoped for. I buzzed in and went downstairs into the crypt of the church. The space was warm and welcoming, walking past the little gallery and into the main bar & lounge where we would sit comfortably as we sketched. We started with quick timed drawings to warm up and try different mediums. Sophie provided various paper sizes, charcoals, pencils and a board to draw on. Throughout the session, Sophie would lend advice and critique my work. She really helped push me out of my comfort zone and made my drawings better. I picked up more nuances about my style and will develop those now that I'm back home. Any time I am in London, I will make a concerted effort to go to this experience. I love listening to the banter between the artists as they draw. The models she gets are fantastic and some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of sketching. I would highly recommend going to this experience if you are new to figure drawing or even if you are a seasoned pro. You will not be disappointed.

This was an interesting class. I came with some degree of artistic background in a digital medium and my partner came with no artistic background, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. After leaving the space, we both immediately reflected on the discomfort we felt in the space due to class differences. Professionally, I'm an educator who has taught from kindergarten to university. My partner is a boxing coach. Neither of us would ever tell our students, especially those who are new to a craft, that their work "isn't a complete disaster" as a mode of encouragement. In terms of class differences, I couldn't help but feel, particularly through Sophie's scoffing at me for not being familiar with English poet William Blake, that we were in the wrong place. While I loved the process of drawing and thought the model was great, I would DEFINITELY do this activity in a different environment — one that is lead by inclusive, class-conscious facilitators and one that is more respectful of beginners and people of diverse backgrounds.
