About your host, Ayuko
I began calligraphy school at the age of six, where I learned to combine precision with individual expression. Now, after 26 years of training, I love sharing the joy of calligraphy through teaching.
What we’ll do
I'll teach you the foundations of Shodo (Japanese calligraphy): the brush, ink, paper, the meaning of each character, and how to express your feelings through the painting of characters. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll create with your own name in kanji. Shodo is not only an art, but also an introduction to Zen philosophy. By remaining calm and focused, it's good for your mind and body.
What I’ll provide
Japanese tea or water 󲀃
All materials for creating calligraphy (paper, ink, etc) 󳀁
sembei (Japanese rice cracker) 󴀁
Notes
Note that we will use Sumi-ink (which can stain your clothes), so please dress accordingly.
Where we’ll be
The lesson will be at a studio in historic Nihonbashi.
