Aussie Chinatown - Stories, Snacks & Secrets

Haymarket, New South Wales, Australia

Experience hosted by Justin

  1. 2 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Chinese (Simplified)

What you'll do

Sydney's Chinatown is full of secrets and excellent restaurants, and on this experience, you're going to see and taste a bit of everything!

We begin outside Paddy's Markets at the start of Dixon St mall. You'll get a run-down on Chinatown's early history and development, before heading off to explore the area.

As we explore Chinatown, I'll introduce you to several Chinese-Australians, starting from the first Chinese settler to arrive in Australia over 200 years ago. Along the way, we'll sample a range of snacks from some of Chinatown's best restaurants, with a minimum of 4 food stops included. All snacks are street foods that represent different parts of China and are designed to be eaten on the move.

This tour has a strong focus on uncovering Sydney's long connection with China, and the contributions Chinese-Australians have made to the community. You'll learn more in 2 hours about Australia's Chinese community than you could possibly imagine, and "pub trivia" style games will keep it interactive and fun.

We finish back where we started, and you'll get a souvenir to take home, plus a great map and guide to Chinatown, covering all the best restaurants and what to order.

My name is Justin and I'm a recovering lawyer. About 4 years ago I quit my corporate job to work in a happier industry - tourism! I love showing people around Sydney and host 2 of Sydney's top Airbnb Experiences.

I have previously lived and studied in China - yep, 我会说中文!(I can speak Chinese). I studied Mandarin all the way from primary school to university, and majored in Chinese Studies at ANU.

Having grown up in the Chinese community, I feel at home in Chinatown, and love bringing other people along on my Chinatown food adventures. I've worked in the area for many years, have made it my mission to eat at all the 200+ restaurants in Chinatown, and I'm making good progress!

I also run my own tour business (Local Sauce Tours).

This was an awesome experience, we loved it! Justin is a really fun host, which is very caring, thoughtful and genuine. It was interesting to hear his stories and sharing food together is always a bonding opportunity so it worked out really well. We covered a lot so it was quite a good general overview/introduction to the Chinatown area with information and encouragement to explore further. Justin’s endeavour to challenge perspectives towards a more inclusive and welcoming view of Australia and who can be Australian is appreciated.

This tour is as awesome as all others tours organised by Justin. I have always struggled to find the best places to eat in Chinatown with so many options around. Now I know where all to go! Justin was very thoughtful with his storytelling and made sure we noticed all the artwork around. What’s even better is that the tour includes 5 dishes and a personalised souvenir which I loved. 100% recommended.

This was fantastic. I love food tours that take you to places you might not go normally and this one did. I’d walked past a couple of the places we visited before and dismissed them, but now I’m going to surprise all my friends with them too… especially the soup dumplings! I also learned lots about the history of Chinese settlers in Australia. Also loved the list of other restaurants to check out.
