What you'll do

Surfboard shaping on the iconic North Shore of Oahu with a legend, Carl Schaper!

See how surfboards are designed and produced on the iconic North Shore of Oahu with a renowned shaper, Carl Schaper.

Spend a full hour at Schaper Hawaii’s retail/manufacturing location with Carl to understand how a board is made, from the old school ways of “Hand shaping” to the modern ways of CAD/ CNC. You will see how a foam blank gets transformed into a finished shape. From there, we check out our glassers and sanders and discuss glassing, tints. color sprays, fin options, and different materials. We’ll talk shop in regards to surfing and give you the basic information on how to get the right board for the different ability levels and types of waves.

We also will take you on an owner's tour of our new and improved shop and possibly order a custom board made just for you. The previously warehouse-esque, humble shop located in the Old Waialua Sugar Mill has been redone to get you ready for charging the surf of Hawai'i.

Carl started surfing & shaping at a very young age on the East Coast. It was inevitable that Hawaii’s warm waters and quality surf would lure him to the beautiful North Shore of Oahu. During his career, he's shaped for legendary surfers: Bonga Perkins, a two time world longboard champ and world class waterman, Garrett McNamara, Brent Bielmann and many more are currently riding our boards and pushing the limits of progressive surfing.
Today, Carl can be found on the North Shore of Oahu doing what he has done all of his life- building quality surfboards.

This was overall a great experience, everyone in the shop was super friendly and willing to share what they were up to. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and came out understanding the process of creating a surfboard from beginning till end! The boards are absolutely gorgeous too. If I didn’t live so far away I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself from buying one!

A super interesting in depth tour on how a surfboard is made and why. They go into as much detail as you want. I think it’s a must do at least once to understand surfboards if you really want to surf.
