The host was polite and responsive in the chat, but unfortunately the experience did not work out for me. Before the tour, I was told that someone other than the host would be the guide, and that “there will be an English translation.” This made coordination more important, because the guide was not the host, did not seem to speak English directly, and I did not know what they looked like. I arrived at the agreed meeting point by the Colosseo metro station, next to the green kiosk/newsstand. It was extremely crowded with many tour groups. I asked how to identify the guide, sent a photo of where I was standing, and asked people nearby, but could not find the group. The guide’s phone also apparently was not working. To be fair, another guest seems to have found the guide, but there were no further Airbnb messages from the guide or other guests to help me locate them. I don’t think this was intentional, but the meeting process felt too risky for such a crowded place.

This was disappointing. The guide, who had advertised herself as a historian, told us the night before that she could not show up, and that someone else would do the tour. This person did have tickets to get us into the Roman Forum and Colosseum, which were sold out from other sources, but had only very basic and limited information about the sites we were seeing, and some of it was incorrect. The tour was advertised as being from a historian who would have detailed and interesting information about these sites. So in the end, it proved an expensive was to get into these sold-out sites. In future, I would recommend to others either going with a more qualified tour guide or just buying tickets yourself well ahead of time (both of these really do sell out) and viewing them independently.
