What you'll do

Blue Mountains and Megalong Valley day trip—in vintage style

A day trip in a classic vintage VW Microbus (called a 'Kombi' here in Australia). We will visit outstanding places in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains west of Sydney, avoiding the crowded tourist spots!

This is ordinarily a SATURDAY or SUNDAY tour, because that is when the wineries are open. But I can certainly schedule a WEEKDAY tour for groups of three or more—please just ask! Instead of wineries, there are many other places to see.

From Sydney, this Experience is a full day trip. You will need to catch an express—but scenic!—train to the Blue Mountains that takes about 90 minutes and costs about $6.00 (and much cheaper on Sundays!). We will arrange to meet at one of the Blue Mountains train stations.

If you are staying at one of the many hotels and B&Bs in the Blue Mountains, I will happily pick you up from your accommodation.

Once aboard 'Helga', my 1975 VW, we will make our way in retro style toward the stunningly pretty Megalong Valley. Along the way, we will stop at places of scenic splendour—the kinds of views for which the Blue Mountains are famous—and visit waterfalls. We'll take a lunch stop—perhaps a local cafe or a picnic, depending on the weather and your preference. Then we'll drive down into the Megalong where we'll walk in some ancient rainforest, visit a secret cave, call in at a vineyard or two, and usually see some of the local kangaroos.

As well as going on a cool ride, you will see spectacular but less-crowded places in the Blue Mountains. I live locally in the Blue Mountains, so my knowledge of this beautiful area will give you a deeper understanding of the landscape — I will take you to hidden places that Sydney tour companies don't even know about! I have a background in natural sciences and have worked with the national parks service and other environmental agencies. I maintain a classic 1975 VW Kombi Microbus which I use for for tours and events. On weekends, we can visit boutique vineyards in a picturesque valley. On weekdays, we usually pick up supplies and enjoy a picnic somewhere quiet.

Stand out activity in the Blue Mountains region! Bang for buck, great bloke and awesome spots! Loved his Kombi. We would never have known about one single place Michael introduced us to if we didn’t take a punt and go with him on an amazing day out. 11/10!

What an amazing experience. Michael is so lovely, we really got along with him and really felt like he was apart of our group. We were taken around Katoomba, Blackheath and into the Megalong Valley where we stopped to take in the sceneries. He personalised the experience for us and will definitely remember this for many years to come. I can’t wait to come back to the Blue Mountains one day!

We had just one day to get a glimpse of the Blue Mountains and didn't want to explore amidst the masses of tourists, which is why we opted for Michael. Off the beaten track, wonderful and insightful information and a lovely host. We can absolutely recommend his day trips into the mountains!

This experience was the best part of our entire vacation. It was unique, Michael was a wonderful host and I am so lucky to have found this trip! We loved going to the off the beaten path locations and Helga, the VW bus- she was charming. Mountain and valley views were beautiful. The topper was lunch at the winery in the valley. Breathtaking views, great wine and food and good company. Thanks for making the day so memorable for us Michael.
