Distilling Australian essential oils

Torrumbarry, Australia

Experience hosted by Tuesday

7 hours
Includes food, equipment
Up to 6 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

From the Bush to the Bottle.

We start the day by harvesting leaves or flowers from the 100 acre bush property on the banks of the Murray River. Fire up the traditional Portugese Copper Alembic Still and watch the essential oils and floral waters flow.

We introduce the benefits and uses of the essential oils and hydrosols. Lots of discussion.and singing sometimes!

Depending on the season, we may pick eucalypt leaves or myrtle stems from the bush; flowers, fruits or leaves from the citrus orchard or native herbs from the edges of the lagoon .

We lunch on the banks of the lagoon as nature struts her stuff.

We distill, bottle, label the essential oil and floral waters and then we put your signature on your personal samples.

From the bush to the bottle

At the end of the day, participants will take home a sample of essential oil and 1 litre of floral water/hydrosol that we have created and gain a new appreciation for essential oils and hydrosols.
Other things to note
The Australian bush is wild and we will be bush walking so wear sturdy shoes, bring a hat, gardening gloves, insect repellent, water bottle and clothes suitable for farming.

My name is Tuesday Browell and I have been distilling essential oils on my farm for 20 years. I love working with nature and want to share my passion with you. I am now retired on my farm and making essential oils is a regular part of life. For 32 years I was the CEO of a private tafe college that specialised in complimentary medicines so essential oils, herbs, bodywork and traditional medicines were a part of my life. I love teaching and enjoy watching participants learn the art and science of distillation.

Where you'll be

The 100 acre Sandalwoods Property is nestled on ancient sandhills on the the Murray River. We will walk through the eucalypts forest and along the riperian zone of the lagoon to find native medicinal plants to harvest and distill. The property has been off grid and fully solar powered for 22 years.
The seasons determine the harvest times of all plants and we will work together to identify and harvest the plants ready for distillation.

This was a great experience. It was very hands on and informative. I left with a new skill set, information and products of the day. Now a fan of hydrosol! Thanks a lot Tuesday.

This was a day I will never forget, set in the mighty presence of the Murray River, and Tuesdays knowledge and care for the country, leading us on a lovely wild gathering and distilling experience. She welcomed us wholeheartedly and we had many laughs whilst learning something truly special. She also whipped up a delicious homegrown and cooked meal from her abundant garden. She trusted us with her precious orange orchard :) too! I wish I had another day to just wander the property and gather more leaves for a distil and ask her more questions. I will be back.

We had a wonderful time, and it was a perfect way for our six year old to get into nature. Releasing the rescued turtle back into the river was a highlight for him. Learning the process to make essential oils, going out into nature to collect ingredients then turning them into an oil was really relaxing and enjoyable too.

I loved spending the day with Tuesday learning how to make essential oils. First we foraged for ingredients - greybox and blackbox gum leaves in my case. Then, she showed me how to pack and work with the copper alembic in her cosy little workshed, while the dogs, chooks and turkey wandered about just outside the door. Tuesday showed me around and shared her vision for her unique property. I had a fabulous time and would highly recommend anyone to stay with Tuesday in one of her train carriages and learn all about distilling. Thank you!

The best experience, especially with a group of friends. Great surroundings and Tuesday shared her knowledge freely. Above and beyond my expectations and we got to go home with heaps of goodies.
