What you'll do
We'll meet up on Hadrian's Wall in the Northumberland National Park and drive and do short walks and talks to special historic and landscape sites along a 15 miles stretch of the most spectacular and rugged section of this ancient frontier of the Roman Empire. We’ll see the Wall, its milecastles, forts, temples and excavations and learn about the history, geology and natural history of this unique landscape. The views are panoramic, west and east along the Wall and north into Scotland and south to the Pennines. You’ll gain insight into the history and lives of the people who shaped and continue to shape this part of England and the ancient geological processes that created it. I want to give small groups of people the opportunity to see the whole landscape through the eyes of an experienced guide and professional geologist. You’ll acquire basic skills that will help you begin to satisfy your curiosity about natural and man-made landscapes all around us. We’ll see some of the most significant sites along this UNESCO World Heritage Site as we drive, walk and talk about how and why Hadrian built his Wall in one of the most rugged and remote landscapes in England.
I’m a northern boy, raised in Cumbria, did my degree in Newcastle. With interludes abroad and across the rest of the UK, I’ve been hiking, running and biking across the north of England for more than 50 years. So I’m local but also a professional geologist and trained Hadrian’s Wall guide. I surveyed parts of Northumberland and Cumbria for the British Geological Survey and retired as a director. I was a science consultant to the BBC for 6 landscape documentaries. Today I am a trustee of 3 northern environmental charities and lead hikes in Northumberland and the mountains of the Lake District.
