“Philemon is an exceptionally hospitable host. His apartment has great views of Asmara from the balcony and best of all working WiFi, which is not easy to find elsewhere in Eritrea. He showed me all the good places to see in Asmara, pointed out the good restaurants or breakfast places and we had some of the best coffee ever together. Phil went out of his way to make my stay an enjoyable one, what else can I say? The apartment even has hot water in the shower (when there are no water or electricity cuts, I stayed twice at his place and was lucky). I wholeheartedly recommend a stay at his place. You won't regret it. Thanks again for everything, Philemon!”
“Philemon is a great host; conscientious and great conversation. I really enjoyed his company as we walked around Asmara - visiting "off the beaten" track type places that only locals know about - dinner at a "no name" restaurant, breakfast at a local version fast food joint, the "best pizza in the world" at the Family Restaurant, and coffee, and more coffee. The accommodation provided was great - in the very heart of Asmara. If you want to see Asmara - or Eritrea more generally - I recommend Philemon to you without any hesitation.”

“If you're visiting Asmara, I recommend staying at Martha's home. I spent a month there, going into the city and exploring the surrounding area. It was always a relief to return to Mai Temani at the end of the day, where there was a nice breeze and fresh air. To get into the city its a short walk to the taxi stand at the end of Adi Abeito, then an inexpensive ride of $10 Nakfa (per person). Return trip starts from a side street next to Bar Amerika. Drivers are very friendly and once they get rolling the trip is quick . Martha was exceptionally helpful and I went repeatedly to places she pointed me to, like La Dolce Vita cafe (for coffee & pastries and taking in the social scene), and Asmara Palace hotel (for wifi). Martha also kept me informed about how things works in Eritrea, with some key cautionary advice helping me avoid a departing flight cancellation (which apparently happens frequently) by checking with the airline a few days in advance. The house is very nice and graciously sized. Sitting in the living room or the balcony with the sun streaming in was a good way to relax at the end of the day. There's a wide view to the west for watching the sun set, and if you look east you can get a good sense of whether there's rain coming. The neighborhood around the house is family friendly and you see the same people day in, day out. Kids are outside playing and are very enthusiastic about greeting visitors. If you can bring chocolate to give out, they'll love you. I was very pleased with my stay at Martha's and recommend it highly! Plus, the salmon colored exterior makes it easy to find!”
