Your guide to Dangar Island
All About Dangar Island
Dangar Island is a forested retreat on the Hawkesbury River near Brooklyn, just north of Sydney. Nestled between Brisbane Waters and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, it’s a natural hideaway along the river. Being on the island is a unique experience, as there are no private cars allowed here, and wheelbarrows are the primary method for hauling goods from the ferry. The town was initially an artists’ colony, and today attracts travelers for its secluded beach and stunning views across Broken Bay.
At just 30 hectares in area, Dangar Island can be walked in about two hours along a circular bushland path. The lower ground takes you past the Bowling Club and the only shop and cafe on the island. The higher ground offers picturesque views of the Hawkesbury River and the community hall, which supports numerous groups and workshops. The island has a healthy mix of natural and cultural history, from lush vegetation and migratory birds to Indigenous engravings and rock shelters.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Dangar Island
Dangar Island’s year-round temperatures are relatively steady and pleasant. Spring offers plenty to do in the surrounding Sydney area, including the Sculpture by the Sea art installation on Bondi Beach every November. December to February is the warmest time of year — visit Dangar Island in January for an epic Australia Day celebration on Bradleys Beach. Autumn temperatures start to dip and nights become a little cooler with breezes off the bay, so pack an extra layer for sunset strolls. May offers a chance to spot ocean wildlife as it’s the start of the whale-watching season. Winter on Dangar Island and the surrounding area is relatively mild, with lower temperatures from June to August, making it an ideal time for walking the island and exploring nearby national parks.
Top things to do in Dangar Island
Kiparra Park
The island’s four-kilometre walking trail showcases its natural beauty and views of the Hawkesbury River. The trail passes Bradley Beach, the cafe, and the bowling club with a turnoff to higher grounds bringing you to Kiparra Park. The park is a favourite picnic spot with a playground and community hall. Allow two to three hours to complete the loop.
Bradleys Beach
Located in the southern portion of the island, Bradleys Beach can be enjoyed year round. The secluded beach is a popular spot for an afternoon picnic, swimming, and relaxing. One of the few accessible beaches in Hornsby Shire, Bradleys Beach hosts events throughout the year, including an annual New Year’s Eve celebration.
Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
Australia’s second-oldest national park combines historical experiences — such as the Aboriginal Heritage walk — and scenic beauty, making it a perfect day trip from Dangar Island. The large park is ideal for cycling, fishing, and bushwalking. Numerous walking tracks and mountain biking trails take you along winding creeks through rainforests, eucalyptus, and mangroves to rocky cliffs with stunning views.
