All about Currimundi lake
Currimundi Lake stretches between Caloundra and Maroochydore, in the Sunshine Coast Region in Queensland, about 100 kilometres north of Brisbane. The area is famous for its picture-perfect beaches, scenic drives, and unspoiled national parks. Canoeing, kayaking, and swimming are popular activities in this saltwater lake, and small motorised boats can often be seen on the calm waters fishing for bream, flathead, and whiting. Plenty of pram, scooter, and bike-friendly walking paths surround the lake.
The picturesque coastal pathway extends to Pelican Waters in the south and Noosa, a sophisticated seaside village, to the north. Just over the dunes, Currimundi Lake connects to Currimundi Beach and its ocean pools and rolling surf. Sitting to the north of the lake, the Currimundi Lake (Kathleen McArthur) Conservation Park is a pristine area of hinterland showcasing the area's natural beauty and native birds along bushwalking paths with epic lookouts. Caloundra’s trendy cafes, street art, and boutique stores are less than a ten-minute drive south. You'll enjoy lots of fresh local produce and seafood in area restaurants from the coast to the hinterland.
What are the top things to do in Currimundi lake?
Kathleen McArthur Conservation Park
A 15-minute bike ride north of Currimundi Lake will take you to the Currimundi Lake (Kathleen McArthur) Conservation Park, a small remnant of wallum heathland that was once a common plant along Queensland's southern coast. This type of heath thrives along Lake Currimundi's shores, rich in plant species. You can also take a short walk along the pathways and discover wildflowers, coastal birds, and ocean-beach views. The initial 130 metres of the walking track out to the lake lookout is also accessible to people using wheelchairs.
Caloundra Street Art Trail
An emerging creative hub, the Caloundra Street Art Trail offers a visual journey of the city's creative gems. Winding through the laneways and streets of downtown Caloundra, the walk includes nine artworks highlighting local history, vibrant stories, and personal expressions of some of the best local and international street artists. The trail is a 1.7-kilometre loop and takes about an hour.
Kondalilla National Park
Meaning "rushing waters" in Aborigional language, Kondalilla National Park is a cool mountain escape about 40 kilometres from Currimundi Lake. In the summer, the park's waterfall plunges 90 metres into a rainforest valley. Tall eucalypt forest interlaces with rainforest species, and drier forests of casuarinas and grass trees grow in the western escarpment. Kondalilla National Park offers a refuge for many native animals and plants making it popular among nature photographers and bushwalkers. You can discover scenic waterfalls, rock pools, and freshwater creeks along the walking tracks. It’s manageable to take on a section of the infamous Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk stretching 58.8 kilometres.
