Your guide to Berowra Waters

All About Berowra Waters

Berowra Waters is an outer suburb and nature lovers’ haven less than an hour north of Sydney in Australia’s southeastern state of New South Wales. It’s set on Berowra Creek and is surrounded by the Muogamarra Nature Reserve, stunning waterways, and popular walking trails. The creek dissects the town into the east bank and larger west bank with the majority of lodging on the west bank. It’s also bordered by two national parks: Ku-ring-gai National Park to the east, one of Australia’s oldest national parks, which extends to the Hawkesbury River, and Berowra Valley National Park to the southwest, one of Sydney’s largest bushland areas. Berowra Waters’ unique waterfront and lush bushland setting offer ample outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and fishing, while dozens of hiking and walking trails in the surrounding parkland showcase the region’s natural fauna and flora, including towering anaphora and eucalyptus trees.

The town itself is known for its delicious food and wine, and there are many waterfront and al fresco dining options available on Berowra Water East Bank and West Bank. Every second Sunday, the Food, Wine, and Arts Market offers a bounty of organic produce, artisanal crafts, and local art to admire.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Berowra Waters

The weather here is generally pleasant all year round with minimal change between seasons. That said, spring is a popular time to visit, offering comfortable temperatures for hiking the Lyrebird Gully circuit or taking a stroll near your accommodation. Berowra Waters heats up from December to February. With hot temperatures, humidity, and intense sunshine, this season is perfect for canoeing or kayaking down Berowra Creek. Temperatures start to drop from March to May, with some cooler days — visit in April and celebrate Australian culture past and present at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. While winters are fairly mild here, temperatures can still be brisk. Pack a jacket and dine out at one of the local waterfront restaurants during this season, or make the short trip to Sydney for a festival of lights with live musical performances and an ideas exchange forum at Vivid Sydney in August.

Top things to do in Berowra Waters

Berowra Valley National Park

One of the largest natural bushland reserves in the Sydney metro area, Berowra Valley National Park offers more than 70 kilometres of hiking trails, including the Benowie walking track, a portion of the 250-kilometre Great North Walk, which stretches from Sydney to Newcastle. The creek is a great spot for canoeing or kayaking, and Crosslands Reserve is a peaceful place for an afternoon picnic. The park protects a variety of flora and fauna and many threatened species in the Sydney area, such as Bynoe’s wattle and eucalyptus camfieldii.

Hawkesbury River

The Hawkesbury River and Berowra Creek offer excellent recreational fishing. Rent a boat at the marina, book a fishing tour, or cast a line from the riverbank for excellent catches, including bream, flathead, jewfish, blue swimmer crabs, and mud crabs. A short-term recreational fishing license is required and can be purchased online. In the summer, you can dive into the cool, calm waters for a swim.

Galston Gorge

The picturesque valley of Galston Gorge is located in the Berowra Valley National Park connecting Galston and Hornsby, intersected by the heritage-listed Tunks Creek Bridge. Hike the Galston Gorge to Berowra Station route for stunning views from the tops of the ridges of Galston Gorge and Crosslands. Pass flowing waterfalls and classic sandstone formations on the 13-kilometre one-way trail. The hike is rated moderate to strenuous and takes approximately 5.5 hours to complete.
